These are the character concepts you want to try really hard to avoid. If you just can't resist, at least try to spice it up a bit. For some characters and some people, Cliches can be done very well, but it takes some preparation and thinking. If you find yourself doing these things, you probably want to do fantasy reenactment of your favorite books/ movies, not Larping.
1. I have amnesia! I have lost count of how many characters I have met who have this cliche... don't do it.
2. I am a Noble, or I have my own Land/Castle/Ship/Etc. First off, most of the nobles in the game are fellow Players. Unless you know them real well, that's just not going to work. And most plot teams will not allow a player to enter the game with a title that gives you legal power and responsibilities unless you are a very experienced player.
3. I am from the place you never heard of. Ya know... way up north? Right? Oh there's an Ocean there... Um.... This is an easy problem to avoid. Just look at the maps for your character's World, then try to pick a place that coordinates with your local chapter. Of course, the above conversation is also a great way to say "I'm new and have no idea" without breaking character to say so.
4. Brooding cloaked figure sitting in the darkest corner. You can do this if you want to... just don't be surprised if everyone does one of the following: Assumes you are a bad guy and kills you a lot OR just ignores you. LARPs are founded on Roleplay and interaction... being ignored is a fate worse than death.
5. I cannot speak and must write everything down. And you thought the guy in #3 had a problem? This will get very annoying very quickly, even if you are a cute girl (who tend to get more tolerance and attention at larps). If you're an annoying guy, just forget about it.
6. I am a Clone of [insert famous fantasy character here]. Usually all larpers tend to watch the same movies, read the same books, and geek out over the same things. Seeing a fanboy coming to the LARP as his favorite character just comes across as uncreative. It is acceptable to gather inspiration from your favorite characters, but don't imitate them completly- make them your own.
7. I am an A$$hole/ Deviant. This is the person who says: I know! I'll be totally hateful/ annoying/ idiotic and break social rules, and through intense RP will develop into an interesting, loved character! Although this cliche has 'good' intentions, it is a big mistake, especially for your first character in a game where nobody knows you in real life. Sadly, when Larpers do not know you in reality, they will associate your character with YOU. If your first impression is that of a bigot or an idiot, you will be considered such in real life as well.
8. I am an outcast/ bastard son or daughter. This is one of those very common cliche's that can be done very well, but usually isn't. Just be careful and think things out a bit. Sometimes simpler is better.
9. I am really a Super-Powerful Being trapped in this newly-created body. At first this may be interesting, and if you are careful it can remain so. But if you constantly shove it in everyone's faces and hog plot attention, it will get old and annoying real quick. Don't try to invent a crutch for your RP- let it grow with the character.
10. I am UBER. This is the type who comes to the game claiming to have single-handedly saved entire cities, and killed Dragons. Yes, not one, but many- and other similarly nigh-impossible scenarios. Try to remember your level, and create a character history that is believable for the level and the World the character lives in. Of course, if your character is just bragging and lying, that is an entirely different story!
